Stonework

Oxfordshire boasts a diverse array of stonework flaunting many stone built villages. Interestingly appearance varies across the county in relation to the stone used during construction. The North is more well known for its golden Ironstone and the South and Cotswolds for its cream and grey hard limestone. Whatever the stone, wherever the location we can handle it.

Drystone Walling

A dry stone wall is shaped both by the local stone and vernacular style of building through dry stone walling, regional style and identity prospers. A single square metre of wall can contain up to a tonne of stone. We adapt to any county stone used, employing traditional methods that stand the test of time.

Traditional Cotswold
Drystone Walling

A traditional Cotswold drystone wall is hard to nail perfectly; it requires skilled traditional craftsmanship, a reliable local quarry and adapting to a traditional, more environmentally-conscious form of construction. Argyll is trained to realise your dream project; we will create not only a long-standing piece of heritage, but a haven for diverse flora and fauna.

Lime Mortar Repairs And Restoration

Buildings built pre-1930s generally were constructed and pointed with 'lime-mortar'. ‘Lime-mortar’ is key to the preservation of heritage properties, maintaining the traditional methods of stonemasonry. Unlike conventional Portland cement, which ranges from ‘too malleable’ to ‘too hard’ for the dense limestone of Oxfordshire, and 'rots' the faces of the stones, lime mortar allows a building to breathe naturally, so prolonging its life. We can repair and match ‘like for like’ the original structure in line with listed building and conservation orders from a new wall capping to a full property re-point.

Conservation Of Ancient Walls

Britain has an exceptionally rich heritage of ruined monuments and a long tradition of caring for them. Our craftsmen uphold this tradition by drawing upon a wealth of experience to repair and rebuild ancient walls like for like with minimal visual intrusion. Matching materials whilst taking into account the natural aging and weathering process requires years of skill; skills our team at Argyll have developed over almost a decade.
